Typical of his surroundings and wild nature ‘El Dinamita’ was in a severe motorbike accident which left him with a fractured skull.Īfter 18 months of waiting for the doctor’s approval he wasted no time. Valero complied an amateur record of 86-6 (45 KO’s) winning 3 national titles and the Central American & Caribbean titles in 2000. The path to re-pay Ortega’s kindness began and excelled beyond what anyone expected. After becoming homeless, the opportunity to have a bed within the walls of the gym was music to his ears. Oscar Ortega became Valero’s first trainer and welcomed the determined street kid with open arms. ![]() He needed a desperate change and an opportunity presented itself when the owner of the bicycle shop he worked in, sent Edwin to a boxing gym after taking a liking to his work ethic. This led involvement in gang violence, robberies & heavy drug abuse. The trend of falling from job to job became a standard occurrence simply just to survive. Before entering his teen years, his father had left, and he dropped out of school to sell fruit in and around his neighbourhood to help support his family. He was born in 1981 and grew up in Bolero Alto, Merida to a life of poverty and hardship. His nickname ‘El Dinamita’ which translates as ‘The Dynamite’ captures his lifestyle and southpaw fighting style perfectly. The years that followed saw Israel Contreras win the WBA Bantamweight title in 1990 and most recently we’ve seen Jorge Linares win world titles in the Featherweight, Super-Featherweight & Lightweight divisions.Įxcept for the boxing purists, not many fight fans would know of Edwin Valero. In January 1965, he defeated American Eddie Perkins in his native Caracas to become Venezuela’s first ever world champion. The first to break the drought was Light Welterweight Carlos ‘Morocho’ Hernandez. In a big upset, Rolando Reyes, 31-4-2 (20), stopped ex-IBF Lightweight titlist Julio Diaz, 36-5 (26), in five frames while another former world champion, Carlos Hernandez, 43-8-1 (24), was outboxed by Vincente Escobedo, 20-1 (12), over ten rounds, losing a points verdict.Venezuelan’s are bred tough but haven’t quite produced the amount of world champions they should have. In other action at Austin, former two-weight world champion Jesus Chavez, 44-5 (3), did not come out for the seventh round against Australia’s Michael Katsidis, 25-2 (21), at lightweight. Pitalua was unable to throw anything back, causing referee Lawrence Cole to step in and stop the one-sided affair at 0:49 of the second.Įdwin Valero captured the vacant WBC Lightweight title while improving his record to 25-0 (25) in the process.Īntonio Pitalua loses for the first time in nearly eight years, going to 46-4 (40). ![]() The big hearted former title challenger beat the count again but was trapped in a corner by Valero, who again unloaded everything he had. Valero moved in immediately and leveled a sustained two-handed barrage at Pitalua, who fell to the floor. The 39 year old Colombian beat the count but was on very shaky legs. Within moments after the second round started, Pitalua went down hard after getting nailed by a lightning fast Valero right hook. Valero and Pitalua traded big shots as the first came to a close, the only exchange thus far into the bout. In the first round, Valero established his control over the bout’s pace, using a busy offense to force Pitalua onto the defensive and using good footwork to avoid trouble when Pitalua did thow anything. The Venezuelan southpaw had made four defenses of the WBA Super Feather crown and was going up in weight against tough customer Pitalua but any questions as to whether Valero’s power would follow were soon dispelled as Pitalua was finished off in the second frame. Edwin Valero continued the most impressive KO streak in boxing last night at the Frank Erwin Centre in Austin, Texas, moving to to lightweight and stopping heavy-handed Colombian danger man Antonio Pitalua to win the vacant WBC title.

We became very close to them by the end of the trek and can say that they made the trip perfect for us. We could not have asked for anything more. We would also recommend you definitely ask for Manoj and Lok who absolutely made our trek extremely enjoyable and memorable. It's a nice short trek for those who can't stay for the 20 day Annapurna Base camp trek. Overall we would highly recommend taking this trek. The Dholagiri mountain range unfortunately for us was under clouds. Luckily we were still able to get a great view of many of the mountains such as Fish Tail, Annapurna I and Annapurna South. Since it was the rainy season there was a huge risk of cloud cover completely obscuring the beautiful views at the top. We woke up at 4am and trekked in the dark with head lamps to around 10,000 ft elevation at Poon hill. The highlight of the trip was our sunrise trek on the morning of the third day to the top of Poon hill. On the first day we started out in the village of Tikidunga and ended in Ulleriįourth day was Tadapani back to Ghandruk where we took our jeep back to Pokhara. The first 3 days were generally uphill or up what seemed to be endless stairs and on the last day we coasted downhill which still can be tough on the knees and glutes. We would hike during the day for 3-5 hours and end in the early afternoon at the guest house where we stayed for the night. The trek itself was very strenuous and although we were able to make decent time each day we would definitely recommend being in overall fit/athletic form They taught us how to play Dhumbal, a fun and easy to learn Nepali card game. On one of the nights we sat and played cards with Manoj and Lok. At night there's a lot of downtime so we would recommend bringing a book or a deck of cards. During the meals, Manoj or Lok would take our order and bring our meals out. Once we arrived we would have lunch/dinner and generally explored the area by ourselves. Going at a quicker pace would get us to our guest house earlier in the day. We were able to set the pace and stop for breaks whenever we liked. ![]() He would sit and play music using reeds so we could often hear him in the distance as we approached Sometimes we would meet Lok at checkpoints where there were villages but most of the time he would just go up ahead at a slightly quicker pace and then wait for us. Manoj was able to tell us the exact elevation of all the mountains on the Annapurna range by memory, an impressive feat! Lok as our porter carried one big bag which held all the majority of our belongings while we carried a day bag with things like water, snacks, and other necessities. The atmosphere was always relaxed and easy going. They would teach us Nepali phrases and we would joke around. ![]() Manoj and Lok would tell us stories and explain to us things like the history of the trek or the mountains. We went during the rainy season so although there were risks of encountering leeches Manoj and Lok were always keeping an eye out to warn us whenever we had them on our boots. Whether it was treading on slippery terrain or looking out for leeches they were constantly on the look out. The roads were very muddy and steep and we would often go along cliff side roads but our experienced driver handled it perfectlyĭuring the trek Manoj and Lok were always looking out for our well being and comfort, always alert and making sure we were having a good time. The only downsides to the bus were that the AC vents were broken in some seats so look out for those before picking a seat and there hadn't been any wireless internet as advertised on the side of the bus.Īfter staying in Pokhara for a day Manoj and Lok arrived the next morning and we took an all terrain jeep to the village of Hile. The seats were roomy and comfortable, we were given a snack and water bottle at the start of the bus ride and it included a lunch stop at a hotel on the way. We booked the Deluxe bus from Kathmandu to Pokhara. He would meet us later separately at our hotel in Pokhara. ![]() Manoj arrived the next day and walked us to our bus to Pokhara. ![]() He told us not to worry about anything since he would be there to take care of us every step of the way We were a little anxious prior to the trip but after meeting with Manoj we felt much more at ease. He was very thorough, telling us about the weather, what to pack, what we could expect and answering any and all of the questions we had. Manoj explained to us the overall plan and logistics of the trek and what we would do each day. We met up with Manoj at our hotel in Thamel one day before our bus ride to Pokhara. We did the 4 day/3 night trek to Poon Hill with our guide Manoj Adhikari and our porter Lok Pandey. ![]() The architecture information is available on systems based on the Intel® 64 architecture. Only a few sites have tides that rise and fall far enough to generate sufficient energy to warrant the use of tidal-power systems. Environmental riskĪ substantial tidal energy system could reshape a delicate seashore environment, inviting the arrival of invasive species and threatening species that already live there. Plants and animals can attach themselves to devices and complicate the operation of tidal power systems. Tidal energy devices are subject to harsh saltwater environments that are teeming with life. Governments and nonprofits can help fund the development of tidal power, but they are subject to taxpayer demands and funding limitations. In the short term it’s difficult for private investors in tidal power to turn a profit. Tidal power systems are expensive to develop and deploy. Tidal power is abundant only at specific times of day, so storage is required to ensure 24-hour power. 5 Key Disadvantages of Tidal Power Intermittence Tides have extremely high energy density compared to wind power and other energy sources, which means very little power gets wasted in the process of converting kinetic energy into electricity. Once a tidal-power system is up and running, it’s comparatively cheap to maintain because the technology has few moving parts - particularly in comparison to the complex web of technologies and machinery required to refine fossil fuels and burn them in turbine-driven power plants. By contrast, our supply of usable fossil fuels is finite. PermanenceĪs long as we have the sun and moon, tidal energy will be here in abundance. Other alternative energy sources like wind and solar are vulnerable to the vagaries of weather. Tides happen at the same time every day with such regularity that they can be scheduled years or even decades in advance. Tidal energy is green: It does not pollute the atmosphere with greenhouse gases. Here’s a quick summary: 5 Key Advantages of Tidal Power Cleanliness ![]() To get the whole picture, we need to weigh the pros and cons of tidal energy. It works much like a hydroelectric plant, except that it uses turbines to capture energy from rising tidewater rather than river water.Ĭurrent technologies offer only a glimpse at tidal energy’s potential. A barrage is a kind of dam across the opening of an estuary. These devices are typically underwater turbines that look much like a wind turbine and capture energy from water moving past the blades. To date, tidal energy technology generally takes two forms: Though all of the earth’s continents have shorelines and tides, we haven’t done much with all that energy. All that moving water produces kinetic energy we can convert into electrical power. Gravity from the sun and moon tugs at the surface of our oceans, creating tides that move massive quantities of water across broad expanses of shoreline twice a day. ![]() Skip a step and leave it unglazed if serving right away.Use any favorite pastry crust-pie crust or shortbread crust works well too.Poke holes in the tart dough with a fork, to prevent the tart from puffing up in the oven.
